Applications are open to anyone who identifies as a woman or non-binary and is keen to explore brewing and the beer industry.
It’s no secret that craft beer remains a heavily male-dominated world, and for many people this makes gaining industry experience and access a challenge. This International Women’s Day, Wiper and True are taking small, practical steps towards improving this, with a one-day work experience opportunity at our brewery in St Werburghs, Bristol.
The opportunity
On International Women’s Day (Tuesday 8th March 2022) we will open our brewery doors to two people, inviting them to spend the day brewing with our team and experiencing daily life in a small, independent brewery. Our aim is to provide a useful initial insight for women and non-binary people looking to explore a career in the world of beer and brewing, who aren’t sure where to start or are struggling to get their foot in the door. We want to make this opportunity accessible to everyone, and so can cover expenses up to £150 per person to cover travel and a place to stay in Bristol before or after the brewday, if you need this. We are delighted to welcome applications for this opportunity from anyone who identifies as a woman or non-binary person.
We appreciate that the opportunity we are offering is a limited one, but we see it as a pilot scheme. If this year’s test works well and is useful to our applicants, we already have exciting plans in place to roll out a much broader work experience programme across all aspects of our business next year, when we are installed in our new production site in Old Market, Bristol.
What to expect on a brewday
Brewdays at Wiper and True start early, at 8am sharp, and last all day. We’ll expect you to arrive shortly before 8am for a team briefing, and to get into your safety gear (safety boots and glasses - which we can provide). Our brewer Fearghal will then guide you through the full brewing process of making a Wiper and True beer, getting you involved as much as possible. You will also be guided through the process of canning beer, including a short stint working on the canning line.
Please note that brewing does include working at heights to access some equipment, working in confined spaces, and working in both cold and hot environments. We recommend you wear older clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty or wet, and bring a water bottle and snacks - it’s tiring work! If you’d like, some of the Wiper and True team will be around on the day to have lunch with you - or there are plenty of great options for food within walking distance from our brewery.
How to apply & timeline
If you’re interested in applying to be considered for the experience, please complete the short form below by 9am on Monday 7th February. We will review all applications on Wednesday 9th February, and contact the selected two applicants on or before Friday 11th February.
By completing this form, you confirm that you identify as a woman or non-binary person, you are over 18 years old, and that you are available for the full brewday on Tuesday 8th March. You will need to arrive shortly before 8am, and will be required to work until 4pm, with the opportunity to stay around after the brew to chat to other members of the Wiper and True team. You will need to take a negative lateral flow test on the morning of the brewday, and wear safety boots (we can provide these if you don’t have your own).
